Thanksgiving is quickly approaching. We have so much to be thankful for at Cupertino Middle School. We have a caring and supportive staff that nurtures each student. The academic achievements, athletics and extra-curricular activities are outstanding. We have involved and supportive parents, PTA and CEEF. CMS is a great place to learn and work.
Enjoy the Thanksgiving recess and we wish you an abundance of the things you are thankful for.

CMS HIGH FIVES!
Congratulations to the 965 students who made the first quarter honor roll by having a 3.25 or higher grade point average. These students were honored in grade level assemblies this week during brunch. Keep up the great work.
Also recognized in the assemblies were 17 students that participated in the video used at the CUSD board presentation last week, 12 students that participated in the Reflections Program, two students that wrote an essay for our Book Fair contest, and two students that received the 2009 Optimist Award for Outstanding Community Service.

CAMPUS VISITORS
In order to reduce the disruption of the instructional day and to ensure student safety, we must have all parents/guardians on campus during the school day, including brunch and lunch, sign in at the office and get a visitor or volunteer badge. If you have an appointment, we will then contact the person you have an appointment with and direct you to the appropriate location.
All students have been informed that if they are missing an assignment or lunch, they should check on the student pick up table in the office. If you are bringing lunch or forgotten assignments/uniforms for your student, it must be dropped off in the office. Thank you for your support and cooperation.
BEAR BUZZ #2
Last month on October 29th, the second monthly Principal and Student Lunch was held. The lunches are intended to give Mrs. Butler a chance to hear from students how things are going this year – what is working and what needs improvement.
Mrs. Butler met with 12 randomly chosen students and received great feedback from them. Students gave comments on Halloween and the pros and cons of having dances inside or outside. They discussed projects and timing of assignments as well as what a modified block schedule might look like. The students also talked about how expectations change from 6th to 7th and finally 8th grade.
LAST CHANCE TO ORDER 2010 YEARBOOK!
Did you forget to buy your 2010 yearbook? You have one more chance to GUARANTEE that you'll have one in June! Pick up an order form and turn it into the office, with $45, by Tuesday, December 1st. There is a list of students who HAVE NOT ordered a yearbook on the window of the student entrance to the office.
INCREASE IN ENERGY DRINKS AT CMS
We are seeing an increase in energy drinks - Red Bull, Monster, Rock Star, Venom, Go Girl, and the like - on campus. These energy drinks are notorious for their sugar and caffeine. The quick boost sugar and caffeine it might provide can also lead to students who are so hyper they lose focus on their studies. Young people feel the effects of caffeine more than adults.
Heavy intake of caffeine is scientifically proven to be very harmful to the human body, leading to many short term, as well as long term side effects. Some of the side effects of caffeine are: irritability, cramps, insomnia, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, infertility, heart diseases and ulcers.
Students may be buying these drinks on the way to school. Please talk to your student about energy drinks.

ANTI-BULLYING ACTIVITIES AT CMS
During the month of November Cupertino Middle School will be participating in Anti-Bullying Activities. Through these activities we’d like to teach students how to recognize the various forms of bullying, learn how to deal with a bully, and help their friends who might be bullied. To help facilitate the conversations about bullying we will be conducting lessons for all Cupertino students within their Language Arts Classes. These lessons will target different issues surrounding bullying that are grade level appropriate. In addition to the in-class lessons the students will have an opportunity to participate in several brunch and lunchtime activities focusing on making CMS a bully free school. In December we will begin activities focusing on “Acts of Kindness”, the true opposite of bullying.
- Sixth Grade- students will learn about the damaging effects of rumors and strategies on how to stop them.
- Seventh Grade- students will learn how stereotypes and labeling often fuels bullying. Through an interactive lesson students will come to realize that stereotypes do not define who a person really is.
- Eighth Grade- students will be participating in a powerful lesson on bullying. Hopefully each student will come away with a sense of how denigrating bullying can be, how each of us are not alone, and how we can support each other in eliminating bullying at Cupertino.
If you have any questions regarding the Anti-Bullying activities, please contact the counseling office.
HOLIDAY TRIP PLANS AND ABSENCES
If you plan on taking any vacation time during the holidays where your student will miss any school, please keep in mind these tips:
- If you plan to be away for 5-10 school days, please request an Independent Study Contract in the office.
- Independent Study Contracts may be requested through the office and must be requested 10 school days in advance of your trip.
- If your travel plans are less than 5 days, an Independent Study Contract is not required.
- You must notify the office of all absences.
NURSES NOTES: SCOLIOSIS SCREENING
California law requires school districts to provide scoliosis screening for 7th grade girls and 8th grade boys. A credentialed school nurse will conduct the scoliosis screening at Cupertino Middle School December 1-3 during PE class. Students are screened separately and individually to assure their privacy.
Scoliosis is a lateral curvature of the spine, resembling an S-curve or C-curve. If a spinal curvature is suspected during the screening, the parent will be notified by mail and requested to seek further evaluation from their health care provider. If your child is currently under care for a spinal condition, please let us know.
Please sign the slip below and return it to your child’s PE teacher if you do NOT want your child to be screened for scoliosis. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the screening, please contact Sandy Hill, RN at hull_sandy@cusdk8.org or (408) 252-3000 ext. 471.
